Getting the Athena Log file

The Athena log file contains valuable information to help us analyse problems encountered on client machines. Depending on the version of Athena you are running, the log file may be generated in a different way and contain different information.

The following instructions are for customers who purchased a CD after September 2008, or purchased the download version; if you purchased a CD before this time, please refer to the pre-version 1.5.0 instructions.

Getting a log file after version 1.5.0 (Purchases after September 2008)

As of version 1.5.0, a log file is always produced when you run the software. The log file is put in your home directory, which for Windows XP is "C:\documents and settings\[your user name]" , for Windows Vista is "C:\Users\[your user name]" and for UNIX (and Mac) is generally /home/[your user name]. No matter the platform, the log file is called "athena.log".

Note: Depending on your Windows Explorer settings you may not see the extension ".log", it may be hidden, in which case look for the file named "athena" with the type "Text Document" or "Log".

This file is not designed to be human readable, so don't worry if you see what appears to be jibberish if you open it in a text editor, just send the file in its entirety to us.

Getting a log file before version 1.5.0

When you run Athena normally, no log information is recorded; when you encounter problems however, you will need the log file to provide us with detailed information of the problem to aid us in problem resolution.

On the CD you'll find two programs, RunCourse.cmd and RunCourseWithLog.cmd. The first program is what gets executed when you autorun the CD, the second loads the software and outputs a log file to "C:\log.txt; this is the file you should sent to support@examsoftware.co.uk
