Volume Installation Options

NOTE! This article relates to an older version of Athena Player, specifically v2x

This page aims to aid in the installation of the Athena Player application in an establishment that purchases a Volume License.

There are two options for installing the Athena Player application on machines designated for use by students:

  1. Standalone machine installation
  2. Networked machine installation

Each of these installation options is described in the following sections, along with what should be performed after the installation has taken place

Standalone machine installation

The software, supplied on CD, can be installed to the local machine by copying the entire contents of the CD to a local directory. Once the copy is complete, the software can be run by executing the program "AthenaPlayerVL.exe". If only one user account is used to run the software, a shortcut can be placed on the users Desktop to ease access to the program.

If multiple user accounts are to use the software, a shortcut should be created in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop as this will make shortcut available to all users on the machine.

In the event multiple exams need to be installed onto the same machine, each exam should be copied to a separate local directory and shortcuts for each - with unique names - set up.

Networked machine installation

If multiple machines are to be installed, it may be considered beneficial to copy the installation to a network location rather than the C: drive. This has the advantage that any updates to the software can be installed in one place, rather than having to re-deploy on all the individual machines.

After the software has been copied to a network resource, shortcuts to the "AthenaPlayerVL.exe" should be set up on each machine that will run the software. Once again, if all users on a machine are to be given access to the software, the shortcuts should be created in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop directory.

Network Considerations

The application requires a working Internet connection to activate the license, if the local network utilises a proxy server, this can prevent the software from accessing the Internet. Athena Player allows the specification of the proxy server and port when it requests the serial, simply select the proxy checkbox to display the required fields.

Post Installation License Activation

Once the software has been installed - whether copied locally or to the network - a user with write privileges to the C: drive should run the software and supply the serial when prompted. After the software is activated, all users who access the machine will have full access to the exam.

If multiple exams are being installed on the same computer, each exam will need to be activated individually. A serial number can be used to activate one or more different exams, depending on the package purchased.
